Get Paid to Take Care of a Family Member

How to Get Paid to Take Care of a Family Member in Michigan

Caring for a family member can be both rewarding and challenging. Many families in Michigan don’t realize that they may be able to get paid for the care they provide. Yes, it’s true! Programs exist that allow children, siblings, or other relatives to become official caregivers for their loved ones.

In this guide, we will show you step by step how to get started, what programs are available, and how to avoid common mistakes. By the end, you’ll feel confident knowing where to start and how to help your loved one safely at home.

Why Families in Michigan Need Paid Caregiver Programs

Caring for someone you love can be joyful, but it can also be hard work.

Think about it: do you sometimes feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to care for your loved one, manage your own work, and handle household duties? You’re not alone. Many caregivers feel the same way.

At a Glance
Quick Summary
  • Michigan offers programs like MI Choice Waiver and Consumer Directed Care that allow family caregivers to get paid.
  • Children, siblings, or other family members can often be hired to provide care.
  • The care recipient must meet Medicaid eligibility requirements.
Here are some reasons paid caregiver programs are important:
  • Caring for family can take up all your time.
  • Many caregivers have to reduce work hours or quit jobs.
  • Families often face stress and exhaustion.
  • Some families need extra financial support to keep a loved one at home.

Getting paid as a caregiver can help families stay together, keep loved ones at home, and feel supported.

Can I Get Paid? Eligibility Requirements
Patient Requirements

To qualify, the person receiving care must:

  • Be 65 or older, or have a disability.
  • Live in Michigan.
  • Meet Medicaid financial rules, which include limits on income and savings.
Caregiver Requirements

You, as a caregiver, must:

  • Be 18 or older.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Be a family member, such as a child, sibling, or grandchild (spouses may be excluded depending on the program).
Michigan Programs That Pay Family Caregivers
MI Choice Waiver Program

The MI Choice Waiver Program helps seniors stay at home instead of going to a nursing home.

  • Personal care: Help with bathing, dressing, eating, and other daily tasks.
  • Adult day services: Social and health programs for seniors.
  • Respite care: A break for caregivers when needed.
Home Help Program (MDHHS)

The Home Help Program is also called Consumer Directed Care.

  • The patient chooses who will provide care—this can be you.
  • You can set schedules that fit your family.
  • Training is usually required, but support is available.
Veterans Affairs (VA) Benefits

If your loved one is a veteran, the VA offers programs that pay family caregivers.

Program Who Qualifies What It Provides Notes
PCAFC Veterans with service-related injury or disability Monthly stipend, training, counseling, respite Can include adult children or siblings
Aid & Attendance (A&A) Veterans needing help with daily tasks Monthly allowance Spouses cannot be paid
Housebound Veterans confined to home due to disability Monthly allowance Adult children or relatives can be hired
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Apply
  1. Check Medicaid Eligibility

Visit the MI Bridges portal to see if your loved one qualifies for Medicaid. You will need proof of income and assets, residency documents, and medical information.

Tip: Call Cottage Home Care MI LLC for help with the eligibility process.

  2. Get a Medical Assessment

A doctor evaluation is required for help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). The doctor will write a care plan.

  3. Choose Self-Directed Option

Hire your caregiver directly through MI Choice or Home Help.

  4. Complete Caregiver Training

Cottage Home Care MI LLC assists with the required safety and emergency training.

  5. Submit Paperwork and Approval

Submit doctor plans, training certificates, and background results for final approval.

Once approved, you become a paid caregiver.

Common Pitfalls
  • Missing income/asset documents
  • Misunderstanding spouse rules
  • Delayed medical assessments
Avoiding Burnout

Maintain your health, join support groups, and use respite care. You cannot care for others if you are exhausted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can companion care help a senior who lives alone and feels lonely?

Absolutely. Companion care is designed specifically for seniors who live alone and need regular social interaction, emotional support, and safe company. A trained companion caregiver visits regularly to talk, play games, go for walks, or simply be present — reducing loneliness and improving quality of life.

Is companion care right for someone with early-stage dementia?

Yes — companion care is often an ideal starting point for someone with early-stage dementia. A companion caregiver provides consistent routines, gentle engagement, and supervision that helps slow cognitive decline while keeping your loved one safe and stimulated at home.

Is companion care covered at no cost for Medicaid recipients?

In many states, companion care services are fully covered by Medicaid with no out-of-pocket cost to eligible clients. Cottage Home Care will verify your loved one's Medicaid coverage and explain exactly what is included at no cost to you.

Can companion care give family members a break from caregiving?

Yes — many families use companion care as respite care, allowing a daughter, son, or spouse to take a break from daily caregiving duties without worrying about their loved one being alone. Regular companion visits reduce caregiver burnout and give families peace of mind.

How quickly can companion care begin after I call?

Companion care can typically begin within 24–48 hours of your initial call. Cottage Home Care handles the intake process quickly so that your loved one has support as soon as possible.
