Want an HHA Job? Learn What Really Matters

HHA Job Requirements | Start Your Career at Cottage Home Care Services

If you're looking to begin a rewarding career in home care, understanding the HHA job requirements is the first step. At Cottage Home Care Services, we’re proud to welcome passionate and dedicated individuals to join our team of certified Home Health Aides (HHAs).

HHAs play a crucial role in supporting clients with their daily needs, providing both physical assistance and emotional support. Whether you're just starting out or already certified, this guide will walk you through the essential qualifications, documentation, and training needed to meet the HHA job requirements in New York.

What Is an HHA?

A Home Health Aide (HHA) is a trained professional who provides non-medical care to individuals in their homes. This care can include help with bathing, dressing, meal preparation, mobility, and companionship. HHAs work with seniors, individuals with disabilities, or those recovering from illness or surgery.

Basic HHA Job Requirements in New York

  • Must be at least 18 years old

  • Legally eligible to work in the United States

  • Completed a New York State-approved Home Health Aide training program (75+ hours)

  • Passed a written and practical skills evaluation

  • Hold a valid HHA certification

These requirements ensure that all HHAs are properly trained to provide safe and effective care within the home setting.

Documents Needed for Employment

If you're ready to apply for an HHA position at Cottage Home Care Services, you will need to prepare the following documentation:

  • Valid HHA certificate (from a NYS-approved program)

  • Two forms of government-issued ID (e.g., Social Security card, Driver’s License, Passport)

  • Proof of work eligibility (e.g., Permanent Resident Card, Work Authorization)

  • Recent physical exam (within the last 12 months)

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray report

  • Proof of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccination

  • COVID-19 vaccination record (if required by regulations)

  • CPR certification (optional but preferred)

Our HR team will guide you through each step of the onboarding process to ensure all your documentation is complete and up to date.

Skills and Qualities We Look For

At Cottage Home Care Services, we’re not just looking for qualifications on paper—we’re looking for people with heart. Ideal candidates for HHA jobs should have:

  • Empathy and compassion for others

  • Strong communication skills

  • Patience and a positive attitude

  • Ability to follow care plans and instructions

  • Reliable transportation and punctuality

  • Experience caring for elderly or disabled individuals (preferred but not required)

Where Can HHAs Work?

Home Health Aides can work in a variety of settings, including:

  • Private homes

  • Assisted living communities

  • Group homes

  • Hospice and palliative care environments

  • Agencies like Cottage Home Care Services across Brooklyn and surrounding areas

We primarily serve clients in their own homes, helping them maintain independence while receiving expert care.

Training to Become an HHA

Don’t have your HHA certificate yet? We can help! We work with state-approved training partners in New York who offer flexible training schedules. These programs typically include classroom instruction and hands-on clinical practice to prepare you for real-world caregiving.

Upon completion, you'll be ready to take the HHA competency exam and start your caregiving career.

Why Work with Cottage Home Care Services?

When you join our team, you’re not just getting a job—you’re becoming part of a family. We offer our HHAs:

  • Competitive pay and flexible hours

  • Supportive supervisors and coordinators

  • Ongoing training and development opportunities

  • Work in your preferred neighborhoods in Brooklyn and nearby

  • A mission-driven, people-first work culture

We believe in supporting our caregivers as much as we support our clients—because quality care starts with a happy, trained, and respected team.

Ready to Apply?

If you meet the HHA job requirements and are ready to make a difference, we’d love to hear from you. Contact us today to learn about available opportunities and how to get started with Cottage Home Care Services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can companion care help a senior who lives alone and feels lonely?

Absolutely. Companion care is designed specifically for seniors who live alone and need regular social interaction, emotional support, and safe company. A trained companion caregiver visits regularly to talk, play games, go for walks, or simply be present — reducing loneliness and improving quality of life.

Is companion care right for someone with early-stage dementia?

Yes — companion care is often an ideal starting point for someone with early-stage dementia. A companion caregiver provides consistent routines, gentle engagement, and supervision that helps slow cognitive decline while keeping your loved one safe and stimulated at home.

Is companion care covered at no cost for Medicaid recipients?

In many states, companion care services are fully covered by Medicaid with no out-of-pocket cost to eligible clients. Cottage Home Care will verify your loved one's Medicaid coverage and explain exactly what is included at no cost to you.

Can companion care give family members a break from caregiving?

Yes — many families use companion care as respite care, allowing a daughter, son, or spouse to take a break from daily caregiving duties without worrying about their loved one being alone. Regular companion visits reduce caregiver burnout and give families peace of mind.

How quickly can companion care begin after I call?

Companion care can typically begin within 24–48 hours of your initial call. Cottage Home Care handles the intake process quickly so that your loved one has support as soon as possible.
